Chia Seed Pudding

It's Sunday, everyone! Hopefully I'm not the first to break that news to you. For me, Sunday means rising early, major meal prep, and time to do all of the homework I've put off for the weekend. It also means a final day of blissful rest before the chaos of Monday rounds the corner. Because despite the fact that it comes with hard work, we all harbor an appreciation for Mondays and the opportunities that come with them. Now, take a good look at the picture attached to this post, provided generously by Milada Vigerova on Unsplash. What if I told you that this is tomorrow's breakfast? You'd likely say that it looks yummy, but what is it? The answer to that is Chia Seed Pudding. This, my friends, is deliciousness. According to this article , chia seed "... come[s] from the desert plant  Salvia hispanica , a member of the mint family.  Salvia hispanica  seed often is sold under its common name 'chia' as well as several trademarked names. Its origin is bel

Primal Nutrition

Hello, all! After reading my post on Primal 101, it's likely that you are intrigued by the idea of becoming a Primal beast. Or, at least I hope you're slightly interested. If not, I'm falling short of my goal. So, for the purpose of this particular post, let's assume you are indeed curious to try it out. But where do you start? The best place is with your nutrition. According to an  article  written by K evin Michael Geary, is it important to "Accept That 80% Of Your Body Composition Is Determined by What You Eat." Fascinating, isn't it? I suppose it is 80% true, then, that abs are made in the kitchen. When following the Primal lifestyle (remember, lifestyle, NOT diet), vegetables, meats, and healthy fats will make up the bulk of your consumption.  1) We'll start with vegetables. Learn to love them, because trust me, they adore you. This document  elaborates that " Vegetables are important sources of many nutrients, including potassium, dietar

Word of the Week

Image
Our world is positively swimming in words, each one carefully crafted for a specific purpose. Personally, I find words fascinating. They are kind of like my dad's set of IKEA kitchen knives; they can be an impactful tool or a dangerous weapon. It all depends on how you use them. This week, a noteworthy word I have come across is.... drum roll please....                                     Fika What's that supposed to mean? Yes, I know Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, but this time, I think it got it right. According to the article "Fika (Sweden)," " Fika ... is a concept in Swedish  culture with the basic meaning 'to have coffee' , often accompanied with pastries, cookies or pie." You can think of it sort of like high tea in England. It is a social custom in which people are able to take a break from a day's work and indulge in a cup of coffee, tea, or other non-alcoholic beverage, as well as some nibbles like biscuits, cakes,

Maya's Menu: Thanksgiving

Image
Happy, happy Turkey Day, everyone! If you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, then happy, happy free-day off from work and school! If you don't eat meat, happy pie day! Preferably pecan pie, but really, anything goes. Thanksgiving is one of my absolute favorite holidays of the year; it encompasses family, fall, an amazing parade, and lots and lots of cooking, all in one! This is my first Thanksgiving being Primal, but I don't think I'll be missing out on anything at all. I've ensured my recipes are a mixture of dishes I can eat and classics, so that my grandparents don't have heart attacks. Shhh... don't tell them that the mashed potatoes are really cauliflower! The items I was most fearful of giving up were the cranberry sauce and desserts, but lo and behold, I figured them out, too! With some of my favorite Primal products, such as Lakanto Monkfruit Sweetener, Yacon Syrup, and Confectioner's Swerve, it was a piece of cake! But I think the main reason that

Primal 101

If I were telepathic, I would reach across the expansive void of the Internet and interpret your thoughts as you read my blog. That would be pretty awesome. Unfortunately, I'm not clairvoyant, but I bet that I can make a guess as to some of the thoughts swimming in your mind: 1) I can't wait for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to be released! 2) Did the dog seriously just pee on my favorite hoodie? 3) A cup of tea sounds really good just now. Oh wait- those are my thoughts. What you're thinking is: Okay, Maya. So you've posted two recipes - great. They both look yummy, and they are both "primal." But what on Earth does that even mean? It's a good question. And as a Primal lifestyle is one of the most significant ideologies on The Avocado and Me , I think it's probably rather important that I convey precisely what it is. Today we will be looking into the basic foundation of the Primal movement, so as to obtain a general comprehensio

Autumn Milk Latte

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to a brand new week. Mondays have a terrible connotation, one that I find completely unwarranted. Sure, the weekend has come to an end a little earlier than we may have wanted, but Mondays mean new beginnings and possibilities. We can make the day exactly what we hope it will be; wake up with a positive attitude and a smile on your face, and it'll make all the difference. Remember: today is the first day of the rest of your life. Nonetheless, I do recognize that with Monday comes more homework, work, and a renewed layer of stress. They can be a little discouraging. So today I've decided to post one of my favorite comfort treats, one to brighten up any morning. With a hint of pumpkin spice, and the creamiest, silkiest texture of all-time, this Autumn Milk Latte is a sure winner. Even better, it is hassle-free, sugar-free, and 100% Primal! See the recipe below: Serves 1 Ingredients A little more than 7/8 cup of full-fat almond milk A lit

Bacon and Two

Image
Happy Saturday, all! One of my favorite parts of the weekend is the opportunity to sit down and savour a hearty breakfast after an energizing workout. Or maybe before, if I'm feeling really hungry. This post is in honor of a classic, delicious meal that you can whip up in just a few minutes: Bacon and Two! Of course, the doneness of the bacon prepared in my household has always been a topic of debate. I'm partial to a floppy texture, while my dad refuses to eat anything but browned, firm slices. Either way, there is no denying that bacon is a real treasure. How convenient that it fits right into the Primal Eating Plan, which I hope to explain in an upcoming post! Rich with plenty of fats, bacon is a great way to start off your day. Top off your serving with a few eggs (an abundant source of protein) scrambled in the leftover grease, and you've got a perfect breakfast. Here's my simple recipe: Serves 1 What You Need: 2 slices of antibiotic and hormone-fr

Welcome!

Hello, everyone, and welcome to The Avocado and Me! Thank you so much for taking the time to explore my creation. Today I am putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as the case may be) to introduce you to this blog; its origins, focus, and hopes for readers. As an eager teenager in a big, big world, I constantly find myself learning new things and making new evaluations. My life is one heck of a full schedule: Homework, exercise, eating, friendships, extracurricular activities, family, school, some more homework, and thousands of other elements mold and shape the way I spend my time here on this lovely planet. I know first hand that life can be chaotic. However, it is very important to me that I remain a happy and healthy individual through and through, and to encourage others to do the same. At the age of thirteen, I decided (after much, MUCH research) to make a huge lifestyle change; I was going to eat a primal diet, exercise more, and actively engage in mindful behavior
